My Rating:

Carrie Singleton is just about done with Clover Ridge, Connecticut until she's offered a job as the head of programs and events at the spooky local library, complete with its own librarian ghost. Her first major event is a program presented by a retired homicide detective, Al Buckley, who claims he knows who murdered Laura Foster, a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death fifteen years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies.

The medical examiner reveals that poison is what did him in and Carrie feels responsible for having surged forward with the program despite pushback from her director. Driven by guilt, Carrie's determined to discover who murdered the detective, convinced it's the same man who killed Laura all those years ago. Luckily for Carrie, she has a friendly, knowledgeable ghost by her side. But as she questions the shadows surrounding Laura's case, disturbing secrets come to light and with each step Carrie takes, she gets closer to ending up like Al.

Now it's due or die for Carrie in Death Overdue, the delightful first in a new cozy series by Allison Brook.

Book Excerpt

“We’ve a real exciting program coming up in two weeks,” Trish said, her eyes lighting up with excitement.

“You mean Al Buckley’s talk,” Barbara said. “I’m sorry I’ll be missing it. You’ll have to email me all about it.”

“Who’s Al Buckley?” I asked.

“Al was a detective on the local police force. Fifteen years ago he was in charge of a murder case that was never solved,” Trish said.

A chill snaked up my back. “Around here? Who was murdered?”

“A lovely woman named Laura Foster,” Barbara said. “She was married and had two boys in high school. Someone came into the house and struck her when no one else was home.”

“How awful,” I said. “And how awful that they never found out who killed her.”

Barbara and Trish exchanged glances.

“What is it?” I asked.

Five reasons to read Death Overdue this Halloween
  1. It’s set in a library. If you guys are anything like me, a secret (or maybe not so secret) part of you has always dreamed of either working in a library or a bookstore. Reading a cozy set one of those locations is a must read. This library experience doesn’t disappoint-It’s set in the small town of Clover Ridge, CT and we get to see and learn a little bit about the inner workings of the library and event planning that takes place there and it’s thoroughly enjoyable to live vicariously through Carrie.
  2. The library is haunted. I love all cozies but I have to admit that the ones that have been a little bit of paranormal element are my favorite. The ghost of the former librarian who haunts Carrie’s Library makes a great secondary character.
  3. A hunky mysterious neighbor. I don’t like a lot of romance in my cozy mysteries but a hint is always welcome and we definitely have that here. Carrie ends up renting a cottage from hunky mysterious insert name here and I love seeing their interactions.
  4. An enjoyable mystery. I loved the mystery in Death Overdue. Allison Brook deftly weaves a tale that incorporates a distant cold case with a new murder and it kept me wondering and guessing until the very end. I wish there had been a few more clues that I could have used to figure it out myself, but overall I wasn’t disappointed.
  5. Halloween elements. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I loved to see how the town and the library in particular celebrated.

My final thoughts

Death Overdue has the perfect combination of a great setting, a touch of paranormal,  a hint of romance and of course an enjoyable mystery. Add in the fact that it takes place during Halloween and you have a killer debut.
