Exciting, emotional, intense. The thrilling follow-up to New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak's highly acclaimed The Secret Sister. The things that happen in families are always surprising and sometimes shocking!
The rich and powerful Josephine Lazarow, matriarch of Fairham Island, is dead. The police say it's suicide, but Keith, her estranged son, doesn't believe it.
Keith bears scars—both physical and emotional—from his childhood, but he's worked hard to overcome the past. After walking away from his mother and her controlling ways five years ago, he's built a new life in LA. He's also accumulated a fortune of his own. But as soon as he learns of his mother's death, he returns to Fairham. He feels he owes it to his grandfather to put the family empire together again—and he's determined to find his mother's killer.
Problem is…coming home to Fairham puts him back in contact with Nancy Dellinger, the woman he hurt so badly when he left before. And digging that deep into his mother's final days and hours entails a very real risk.
Because the person who killed her could be someone he loves…
Of all the people to offer her a ride, it had to be Keith and his sister, Maisey Lazarow. Although Keith hadn’t said anything since she climbed in, Nancy could see his stunning blue-green eyes in the rearview mirror as he eased into traffic. She *still* dreamed about those eyes…
Wow was this one dysfunctional family!! Honestly during much of this book I felt like I was watching a soap opera. Not necessarily a horrible thing…but not exactly what I was expecting after how much I enjoyed the 1st Fairham Island book The Secret Sister.
In Brenda Novak’s The Secrets She Kept, we get to know a lot more about the matriarch of the family, Josephine, as her children and more specifically her son Keith question the circumstances surrounding her untimely death. For those who remember Josephine from The secret Sister, it will come as no shock that she was murdered…But by who? The list of suspects is long and surprising.
As Keith and his sisters investigate…much to the annoyance of local authorities…secrets that Josephine has held (some for decades) start coming to light. And let me tell you…they are not pretty.
I’ll never complain about my own Mother again!!
I have to say that this was a fast and pleasant read but I never fully connected to Keith. I understand that his mother broke him and he was a recovered addict, but I still can’t justify all of his actions and reactions. I just felt that Nancy deserved better!
And the fact that the family was able to withstand all of the crazy revelations and come to terms with them within such a short time frame just seemed quite unrealistic to me. Especially one particular betrayal that I can’t imagine forgiving. Hence the Soap Opera feel.
Despite what might appear to be a slightly negative review, I really did enjoy The Secrets She Kept for what it was…sort of like that crazy celeb story in the tabloids that you can’t help reading while on line at the grocery store. Novak writes really well and I was captivated and compelled to read on although I wasn’t really ever completely invested.
A solid read with a great setting…I’m looking forward to hopefully getting Roxy’s story in the next installment of the Fairham Island series.
