Before you get down on bended knee…

…you should be pretty darn sure the answer will be yes. For ten years, Connor O'Rourke has been waiting for Jessica Dunn to take their on-again, off-again relationship public, and he thinks the time has come. His restaurant is thriving, she's got her dream job at Blue Heron Vineyard—it's the perfect time to get married.

When he pops the question, however, her answer is a fond but firm no. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Jess has her hands full with her younger brother, who's now living with her full-time, and a great career after years of waitressing. What she and Connor have is perfect: friends with an excellent benefits package. Besides, with her difficult past (and reputation), she's positive married life isn't for her.

But this time, Connor says it's all or nothing. If she doesn't want to marry him, he'll find someone who does. Easier said than done, given that he's never loved anyone but her. And maybe Jessica isn't quite as sure as she thinks…

Quote

“Solitude was the order of the night. He was Irish – brooding was the song of his people.”

My Thoughts

Anything For You had the perfect blend of two of my favorite romantic tropes: Friends to Lovers and 2nd Chance Romance.

As with all of the Kristan Higgins books I have read thus far, Anything For You is more than just a simple romance. Higgins always manages to delve a bit deeper…to put her characters into real world situations and make them feel oh so real and therefore all the easier to relate to.

Initially, I really had a hard time finding something to like in Jessica’s character. I could not for the life of me understand why she seemed to be stringing Connor along for so many years…to the point that he seemed almost ready to finally walk away from all that they shared. As we slowly learned more of her backstory, some of those things that appeared to be flaws were actually strengths and my appreciation of Jess grew.

Connor I loved from the onset. What an amazing lead and what generosity of heart and patience he displayed!

As I mentioned earlier…there are some heavier elements woven throughout….issues such as alcoholism, poor parenting, fetal alcohol syndrome etc. This lend a depth and realism to the story that makes this more than “just a romance.”

The romance is alternately slow and steady and stop and go…but the ending is worth it.

I promise.

About Kristan Higgins

Kristan Higgins

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author and two-time winner of the Romance Writers of America RITA® Award, Kristan lives with her family in a small Connecticut town that boasts a wonderful library, a great agricultural fair, a really good ice-cream stand and not much else. She is the mother of two lovely kids and the wife of a brave firefighter who is also (perhaps more important) a fantastic cook.

Previously a copywriter, Kristan began writing fiction when her children graced her life with simultaneous afternoon naps. Writing, she found, was infinitely more satisfying than folding laundry, and so began her first novel. Kristan holds a BA in English from the College of the Holy Cross, which means she can identify dangling participles, quote many great novels and play a mean game of Scrabble.

Kristan is an award-winning baker, devoted fan of the New York Yankees and an avid reader. She and her crew spend as much time as possible at the family home on Cape Cod, where they shiver in the Atlantic, ride bikes, swat horseflies and don’t catch any fish.

  1. I’ve only read one of Kristen Higgins’ books, but I do want to read more. This one, though, makes me hesitant. I think I would also have a really hard time liking and rooting for Jessica. Even if her backstory explains things.

However, I’m so glad that you really enjoyed this one.

It doesn’t take long to understand where she is coming from…it’s just really perplexing at the start!

Wow, fetal alcohol syndrome ? That’s heavy. I thought this is another bubbly gum romance from the cover art

  3. I love Kristan Higgins, and this was by far my favorite in the series. Jessica was a complex character carrying a lot on her shoulders. There were a lot of stops and starts to the romance, but as you said, did it pay off!! Thanks for sharing!

She is my new favorite romance author for sure, Liza. I’m so glad she has an extensive backlist I can dig into!
