My Rating:

“Are you happy with your life?” Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable--something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Book Quotes

“I can’t help thinking that we’re more than the sum total of our choices, that all the paths we might have taken factor somehow into the math of our identity.”

“We all live day to day completely oblivious to the fact that we’re a part of a much larger and stranger reality than we can possibly imagine.”

“It’s a troubling paradox -I have total control, but only to the extent I have control over myself.”

“I’ve always known, on a purely intellectual level, that our separateness and isolation are an illusion. We’re all made of the same thing—the blown-out pieces of matter formed in the fires of dead stars.”

My Thoughts

Let me just sum it up for you:  🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

After enjoying watching Crouch’s Wayward Pines on television, I decided that Dark Matter sounded like a great place to start in terms of reading Blake Crouch. Gosh was I right!

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch completely blew my mind in the best possible way!

I went into Dark Matter completely blind…except for knowing there was a lot of love out there for this book. I generally do my best to avoid reading too much of a synopsis or watching any book trailers…I hate even the smallest spoiler. Usually this works out well for me, though obviously at times I end up with books that I probably would not have picked up had I actually read the premise.

Therefore I am not going to go into much detail about the book (you can read the premise above if you so desire) but I will say that I COULD NOT put this one down. AT. ALL. Crouch’s writing is perfect for this genre…he manages to develop a great character and include enough “science” so that I could follow along all without sacrificing pacing.

I was soooo invested.

I needed to know what would happen next and how this all would end. And just when I thought I had a handle on what was going on it all blew apart and Wow…Blake Crouch ratcheted the tension and suspense up another notch.

For some, Dark Matter might be a little too mind boggling. I had no difficulty just going with it…but I can see how some people might get a little frustrated trying to keep up.  All I can say about that is that it is sooooo worth it. Don’t Give Up!

Definitely one of my top reads of 2016. If you haven’t read this one yet…make sure you add it to your TBR now.

I’ve been meaning to give Blake Crouch a try. I haven’t watched Wayward Pines but the books are on next years to read list and so is this one! this one really does sound amazing. I haven’t read a good thriller in ages 🙂

Ha! We are alike then. I always feel like my reviews are so short…but I try to put it in perspective as most other reviews are 90% recap of the book which I don’t do.

Dark Matter is one of the most interesting, absorbing and thought provoking novels I’ve read in quite a while – LOVED IT! <3

  3. I’m pretty excited for this one, between all the great reviews and my experience with the Wayward Pines books, which was pretty good. I think I’m going to move this one up a bit on the ole TBR… 🙂
