My Rating:

Miss Marian Wynswich is a rather unconventional young lady.

She plays chess, reads Greek, and is as educated as any young man. And she's certain falling in love is a ridiculous endeavor and vows never to do such a thing.

But everything changes when she receives a Christmas visit from someone unexpected--a young and handsome English lord.

My Thoughts

I haven’t read a Regency Romance in ages and Marian’s Christmas Wish was the perfect reintroduction.

Fast paced, with great characters and just enough romance and intrigue – Carla Kelly delivers on all fronts. Add in some fun banter and situations and this one is a winner.

Marian is just delightful. She is young (just 16) and fresh and is adamant that she will not conform to society’s standards. As with a lot of recency romances…there is a large age gap between the hero and heroine. Gil at 28 is a full twelve years Marian’s senior. The witty repartee between the two and the adventures that Marian & Alistair go through with an unwitting Gil just add to the humor and make Marian’s Christmas Wish all the more entertaining.

As the book takes place during the Holiday season we have lots of charm, a nice glimpse into some English holiday traditions and there is plenty of cozy to go around. I want to start making wishes on Christmas pudding!!

The book takes an unexpected serious turn toward the end which threw off the vibe of the book a bit but not enough to detract from my overall enjoyment.

A satisfying ending completed my happy two day read and made me sure I’d be looking for some more Carla Kelly on my library’s bookshelves!

A perfect read to kick off the Holiday Season!

Original Cover from 1989

I just love the original cover so much! Classic 1980’s regency romance!! LOL

  1. This sounds like a delight, Melissa! I love Regency as well. I like that this one is set during the holidays so we get to see some English holiday traditions. That’s a nice touch. The age difference – well, when I first read it I paused…but then, girls were often married by then during that time so… I’m happy you had such a good time with Marian. I’ll have to look up this one!
