My Rating:
One step forward. Two steps back. The Tufts scholarship that put Nora Stuart on the path to becoming a Boston medical specialist was a step forward. Being hit by a car and then overhearing her boyfriend hit on another doctor when she thought she was dying? Two major steps back.
Injured in more ways than one, Nora feels her carefully built life cracking at the edges. There's only one place to land: home. But the tiny Maine community she left fifteen years ago doesn't necessarily want her. At every turn, someone holds the prodigal daughter of Scupper Island responsible for small-town drama and big-time disappointments.
With a tough islander mother who's always been distant and a wild-child sister in jail, unable to raise her daughter--a withdrawn teen as eager to ditch the island as Nora once was--Nora has her work cut out for her if she's going to take what might be her last chance to mend the family.
But as some relationships crumble around her, others unexpectedly strengthen. Balancing loss and opportunity, a dark event from her past with hope for the future, Nora will discover that tackling old pain makes room for promise...and the chance to begin again.
First Paragraph
The first thought I had after I died was: How will my dog cope with this?
The second thought: I hope we can still go with open casket.
Third thought: I have nothing to wear to my funeral.
Fourth: I’ll never meet Daniel Radcliffe now.
Fifth: Did Bobby just break up with me?
3 Reasons you need to Read Now That You Mention It
- Kristan Higgins delivers another wonderful story in Now That You Mention It about family and friendship and finding yourself in a way that feel refreshingly authentic. I loved seeing Nora negotiate her difficult return home, her relationships with her mother, sister and niece as well as all the townfolk she’d left in her dust when she went to college. Nora is such a strong well developed character that I felt as if I really knew her.
- Who doesn’t love a semi second chance romance? Nora reconnects with many people from her past, some that she knew well and some that were more than she realized at the time. That is the case with the romance in Now That You Mention It. I loved seeing how it realistically developed and the constant choices that were made along the way. No insta-romance here.
- I was taken on a wonderful vacation to Maine. If any of you know me, you know that small town coastal New England is my Story Setting Sweetspot. Set on a small island off the coast of Maine, Higgins fleshed out Scupper Island – a wonderful town, an interesting set of townsfolk, and made me wish that I lived there.
Bottom Line:
Kristan Higgins delivers another compelling read that is not only thoroughly enjoyable but also has the deeper undercurrents and meaningfulness that I’ve come to expect from her.

I need to read more by her 😀
She’s so great! The only good thing about being late to the party (I think I discovered her late 2015) is that I have a long backlist to read rather than having to desperately wait for her next book!
I think I’d read it based on your quote picks from the beginning paragraph alone, but I also love the emphasis on going home and family, too. Plus, I’ve never tried her books. Sounds good, Melissa!
You really should try her Sophia…I think you’d love her books!
I need to try her books.

You should Mary. Lately she has been wring a lot of Women’s Fiction like this, but she also has a lot of contemporary romance that’s great on her backlist.
I loved this one! Glad you did too!

Yes it is Elle! Hope you get to read it soon.
OMG I love the first line 🙂 Yes this is on my shelf too, you can’t beat her humor. I still laugh out loud when I think back on some of her heroine’s antics. 🙂
Higgins is a go to author for me and one of the highlights of my life was having dinner with her two years ago. Great review!

Looks like a fun read, and I love the sound of the small town Maine setting.
The setting was just perfect! I want to move there! lol
I heard great things about the author and her books but I still need to read one of them!
She’s really great! Hope you have the chance to check her out soon!
I think I *have* to read this because my first thought as lay dying would be “how would my crazy, anxious dog deal?” I think I’ll look for this on audio. It sounds like a good choice when I’m between horror novels!
I think the same about my cat! Bet this would be great on audio…http://amzn.to/2FgpVgW
I love the setting and thus sounds like such a good read. That opening you shared hooked me right away.
It definitely hooked me as well!!
So happy to see your five star review. I was supposed to read this during Christmas break but I didn’t hardly read, so I still have it waiting for me. Hope to get to it very soon!
