First Line:  “Laurel’s shoes flipped a cheerful rhythm that defied her dark mood.”

Summary (from GoodReads):

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.
Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.
In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

Favorite Quotes from the Book:

“Typical mother advice. Sweet, honest, and completely useless.”

“And do you really think someone’s going to look at you and say, ‘Hmm, I think that girl’s a plant’?”

“It didn’t matter to her that Tamani only had weak magic, he was magic.”

“For a perfect moment, no one else in the world existed outside of this tiny space on a wooded path.”

My Thoughts:

This was a very entertaining quick read that should definitely appeal to young adult readers.  I loved the descriptiveness of Aprilynne Pike’s world building and was quite impressed at her creativity!

She presented a tale of the Faerie that was quite unlike any I’ve ever heard and yet seemed completely believable and in fact…made the most sense to me of almost anything I’ve heard.  I absolutely loved the idea of the Fae being plants and thus tied inextricably to the earth.  Magical.

The book was a bit slow at the onset but then quickly picked up pace and was quite an enjoyable read!  I would not say that I loved it…maybe I’ve been reading too much YA lately and am looking for a bit more depth…but it was very entertaining and “paranormal” in a wonderfully earthy and believable way!

Was it worth my Time?

  1. I downloaded this book for free when it was up on Amazon. I just haven’t had a chance to read it. I’m always interested in reading about the different variation of Faerie, so I’m intrigued. But I’m in a seriously YA slump right now, and that definitely does affect how I feel about a book, so I don’t mind holding off on it for a while longer.

  2. @ Juju – I’m not 100% sure that I am going to continue with this series especially if you say it is slow in general!

@ Missie – That’s when I got it too…so for free it was actually a great read! But I think I am going to stay away from YA (which I only started reading a few months ago) for a little bit
