Thank you, Melissa, for having me on your blog!
The star of my BeSwitched Series is Surla–a magical black cat who switches lives with lonesome souls. As a writer with cat characters in my books, it is essential for me to know the intricate lives of felines–The way they curl their tongues when they yawn, how they lower themselves to the ground as they sneak, the differences in meowing versus mewing, and so on. In honor of Surla, I thought I would share with Melissa’s Eclectic Bookshelf a brief history of the cats who had a place in my life at one time or another, and how they have inspired me.
The 7 Cats Who Inspire My Writing
1. Salem. Siamese. Lived all the way to nineteen years old. The only time she had an attitude was when she was in labor under my bunk bed, growling the entire time. A very amiable kitty. Patience is something Surla wanted to teach her Idis when they switched lives, since she knew it would take time to trust the witch wouldn’t use Black Magic.
2. Cleopatra. Calico. This cat must have had Multiple Personalities Disorder. She would purr up against my ankles one moment and then suddenly hiss at me the next. This reminds me of when Idis is making a business phone call as a cat, when she has the sudden compulsion to hiss into the receiver.
4. Kitten. Orange and white striped. Kitten was so big and orange that he was like Garfield come to life. He even had a little box he stuffed himself into. He was a leader among the cats in his hood. He influenced a member of a neighborhood cat posse inBeSwitched.
5. Petunia. Calico. Subservient yet suspicious. She was subservient to Kitten, who took her in as his own. We could pet her, but she always glared at us like she could run away any moment. She reminds me of how much Idis hated to be held as a cat, so much so that it would cause her eyes to bulge.
6. Rosie. Bobtailed Calico. This one loves to attack hair. I have a sister-in-law with hair down to her waist. The way Rosie pounced at her from behind, digging her nails into her sweater, influenced a scene where the witch Idis (after switching with Surla) is mad at Surla for wanting to perform a spell on her beak nose.
7. Sir Sebastian (Meow-Meow). White and gray bobtail, son of Rosie. At first, it was hard to choose out of Rosie’s litter, which of the three I would keep. But when I spotted Meow-Meow, this tiny fluffball kitten, taking a tinkle in his momma’s litter, I knew he was a keeper. There’s a scene in BeSwitched Witch where Idis needs to relieve herself and Surla tells her that now that she is a cat she can use a bush; that didn’t go over well.

This ends The 7 Cats Who Inspire My Writing. Hope you enjoyed it! Did any of these cats remind you of yours?
