A Chat with Sandra Brown
1. Can you tell us a little something interesting about yourself that isn’t in your bio?
I’m the oldest of five sisters, and there’s seventeen years between me and the youngest. Of the five, I was always the bossiest. . .and continue to be! In adulthood we became very close friends, and I treasure each of them.
2. I find it interesting to know what environment authors find most productive… Do you use a pen and paper or laptop? Quiet room at home or bustling café? Basically, what gets your creative juices flowing?
While thinking of a new plot, I take notes on a legal tablet. It’s portable. I can take it anywhere. But once the “idea” becomes a “story,” I return to my keyboard. I seem to think through my fingers. I have a small home office where I work on weekends, but every workday I go to an office, where I have two employees. They do everything for me except write the books. And the building is actually an older house, so the workplace has a homey feel that I love.
3. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
LOL A self-appointed online critic called one of my books “verbal diarrhea.” That was a first! I’d call that a harsh criticism. Two “best compliments” come to mind. At a recent conference, a young woman brought a hard cover book which had belonged to her grandmother. They lived together and were very close. The elderly lady passed in her sleep. When her granddaughter discovered her, she noticed that my book was on her grandmother’s nightstand and was probably the last thing she’d touched. She asked that I sign it to her grandmother. Another reader brought a hard cover book and asked me to open it. I was surprised to find a square cut-out that went all the way through it. Her husband of eighteen years had proposed to her by placing the ring box inside that square. It’s indeed a compliment to know how personally connected my books, and by extension, I, have been to significant moments in the lives of readers.
4. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Read. Watch a few fav TV series. Read. Watch movies. Read. Socialize with family and friends. Read. Travel. Did I mention I enjoy reading?
5. Do any animals share your life? Please tell us about them.
I had the two most beautiful, even-tempered, well-behaved Golden Retrievers ever. They were litter mates. I got them when they were seven weeks old and named them Chase and Lucky after the brothers in the Texas! Trilogy. They got old and infirm, and I was forced to put them down on the same day. Which was only right and benevolent. They’d been together from the womb; I couldn’t possibly separate them. They were so special, I haven’t yet been able to get another pet. Maybe one day.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown comes a gripping story of family ties and forbidden attraction.
A Texas Ranger, relegated to deskwork due to past recklessness, petitions to regain custody of his five-year-old daughter, and his case is assigned to a family court judge who is as attractive as she is ambitious. When a masked gunman barges in during the custody hearing with his sights on the judge, the Ranger reacts instinctually and goes after him. But authorities apprehend the wrong man, and the real gunman remains unknown, at large, and a threat. Will this take-charge lawman jeopardize his chances of custody by going after the would-be assassin? And will this unlikely pair be able to deny the forbidden attraction building between them?
