I am thrilled to be part of the MacTeen Tour for The Fallout! I loved both The Compound & The Fallout!!
Look for my reviews of both after my There Are Witches In The Air 2013 Event concludes!
Prepping for Doom
My research for The Fallout led me down a dark path straight into the world of people prepping for the end. And yes, they like to call themselves that. Preppers. I found myself a bit obsessed with the show Doomsday Preppers. Mind you, not obsessed in an “OMG, we’ve got to start doing this NOW! Before the END!” It was more like “OMG, where did they find these people?” But it was impossible to look away.
There was the guy intent on being able to pack all his seeds from the freezer into a duffel bag in under ten minutes. ( His prepper friend timed him with a stopwatch. I noticed neither mentioned having any other friends. Maybe their fallout shelter is too small for anyone else.) And there was the married couple who decided to divorce, and the update stated they were currently embroiled in a court battle over all their prepper materials. (I think she won and he got the dog.)
I figured there were a couple ways of looking at the prepper trend. First, maybe they are all smarter than I am. There is certainly the possibility of an apocalypse, and preparing for that isn’t entirely futile, is it? And then there’s the other way. Something I discovered during the writing of both The Compound and The Fallout. If there is some kind of Armageddon, do I want to survive that way? Look at Eli and his family, who had the best of everything. They were not having the slightest bit of fun. And the realistic preppers, the ones who showed their shelters on television? I wouldn’t want to spend a rainy afternoon in one of their tiny dismal places. So I guess, when it comes down to it, maybe survival isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Give me a last hour on Earth with a pound of mini Snickers and a diet Mountain Dew (can, not bottle) and we’ll call it good.

In this long-awaited sequel to The Compound, Eli and his family can run but they can’t hide.
After barely escaping from the compound where Eli’s dad kept his family for six years, they’re learning to acclimate to “normal” life—whatever that is for them. It seems like the entire world wants to know what happened to this high profile family.
Slowly they begin to make their way back into the world, but Eli can’t escape the creeping feeling that they’re being watched everywhere they go. But by who?
Eli’s anxiety is heightened as unnerving information continually surfaces about Eli’s dad’s company. Not to mention the sketchy new friend his twin brother Eddy has. Nothing seems to be “normal” anymore. New people are entering their lives—but who can Eli and his family trust?
