Prepping for Doom

My research for The Fallout led me down a dark path straight into the world of people prepping for the end. And yes, they like to call themselves that. Preppers. I found myself a bit obsessed with the show Doomsday Preppers. Mind you, not obsessed in an “OMG, we’ve got to start doing this NOW! Before the END!” It was more like “OMG, where did they find these people?”  But it was impossible to look away.

There was the guy intent on being able to pack all his seeds from the freezer into a duffel bag in under ten minutes. ( His prepper friend timed him with a stopwatch. I noticed neither mentioned having any other friends. Maybe their fallout shelter is too small for anyone else.) And there was the married couple who decided to divorce, and the update stated they were currently embroiled in a court battle over all their prepper materials. (I think she won and he got the dog.)

I figured there were a couple ways of looking at the prepper trend. First, maybe they are all smarter than I am. There is certainly the possibility of an apocalypse, and preparing for that isn’t entirely futile, is it? And then there’s the other way. Something I discovered during the writing of both The Compound and The Fallout. If there is some kind of Armageddon, do I want to survive that way? Look at Eli and his family, who had the best of everything. They were not having the slightest bit of fun. And the realistic preppers, the ones who showed their shelters on television? I wouldn’t want to spend a rainy afternoon in one of their tiny dismal places. So I guess, when it comes down to it, maybe survival isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Give me a last hour on Earth with a pound of mini Snickers and a diet Mountain Dew (can, not bottle) and we’ll call it good.

In this long-awaited sequel to The Compound, Eli and his family can run but they can’t hide.

After barely escaping from the compound where Eli’s dad kept his family for six years, they’re learning to acclimate to “normal” life—whatever that is for them. It seems like the entire world wants to know what happened to this high profile family.

Slowly they begin to make their way back into the world, but Eli can’t escape the creeping feeling that they’re being watched everywhere they go. But by who?

Eli’s anxiety is heightened as unnerving information continually surfaces about Eli’s dad’s company. Not to mention the sketchy new friend his twin brother Eddy has. Nothing seems to be “normal” anymore. New people are entering their lives—but who can Eli and his family trust?

So glad the sequel is finally out. I love the worlds Stephanie builds and the characters with all their real world flaws. Loved The Raft and The Compound so The Fallout is going to the top pf my list of TBR. Thanks for the giveaway

A great choice, I’ve been looking forward to Fallout since I first heard it was coming out, and now with the chance to win both books it’s even better. Thanks very much.

I loved the guest post about the show Doomsday Preppers!!! I watch that show every now and then when I need a good laugh and when I want to feel a bit more normal. I actually saw the one about the couple getting the divorce.

Actually, I’m a little bit embarrassed that my mom has hundreds of gallons of water stored and a ton of instant powdered meals in case something ever happens. My uncle, who has his own sustainable mini-farm and about 10 times the amount of food my mom has stored, convinced her to do this. Of course, if anything ever does happen, I am going over there immediately 🙂

On another note, The Compound and The Fallout sound amazing and I think it’s awesome that The Compound was written as a standalone, and then decided to write another book and make it a series. I’ve got my fingers crossed, I would love to have the chance to read these books – it’s my absolute favorite genre!

My husband would love this series. Looking forward to reading them. We enjoy watching Doomsday Preppers and Doomsday Castle. We try to prepare ourselves ahead (right now we are trying to store things up for this winter in case it’s bad and our power goes out).

  5. Vivien

I also watched the Doomsday Preppers. Some episodes really were great! Enjoyed the first book and cannot wait to read Fallout!

This series sounds really good. I have heard of preppers. My friend watched a series about preppers and told me a couple of stories. I find them interesting however I don’t actually really believe in the need to be a prepper. That’s just my opinion though but I find reading about and watching it is interesting. 😀

The Compound sounds like a great suspenseful read. Now that it has a sequel, will there be more books coming for the series?

  9. Darith

The plot is intriguing! I wonder how the kids feel having to live in the Compound for so long and not know life outside.

  10. Michele
