ย Notes from Melissa

As April heads into May..I’m getting an itch to be outside more and get some gardening done. And by gardening I mean plant a few annuals and sit on my patio and read! lol Do any of you garden?

Also I am starting to think about BookExpo. Are any of you going? I have my pass but as much as I love going and missed it last year in Chicago…I also dread the long train ride commutes in and out of the city each day and the crowds. I so don’t like crowds.

Challenge Updates

NetGalley – I finally got my Percentage up over 85% – currently at 88% woohoo! I really need to go back and read and review some of the books that I slacked on in 2013 & 2014. I really want to get up over 90%!

Witches & Witchcraft Reading Challenge – I have not been reading a lot of books with Witches or Magic this year ๐Ÿ™ So far I have 4 with magical elements. The 1st has a tarot reader as the MC and the next two are more Magical Realism…but I’m going to count them!

1. Give the Devil His Due (Tarot Mystery #3) by Steve Hockensmith with Lisa Falco
2. A Charmed Little Lie (Charmed in Texas #1) by Sharla Lovelace
3. The Simplicity of Cider by Amy E. Reichert
4. The Librarians and the Mother Goose Chase (The Librarians #2) by Greg Cox

What I Read The Past 2 Weeks

The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer (Audiobook)
Saint Death by Marcus Sedgwick
The Librarians and the Mother Goose Chase (The Librarians #2) by Greg Cox
The Simplicity of Cider by Amy E. Reichert

What I Am Reading Today

The Garden of Small Beginnings by Abbi Waxman
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (Audiobook)
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah (Audiobook) – This audio is taking forever not because I am not enjoying it but because I am listening with my husband therefore it’s like 1/2 an hour a month! lol

ย What I’ve Been Watching the Past Few Months

🎥ย  Manchester by the Sea, La La Land, Rogue One, The Force Awakens, Beauty and the Beastย – I definitely recommend all of these.

🎥ย  Kong: Skull Island, Splitย – Eh…neither of these thrilled me.

🎥ย  Really Looking forward to Wonder Woman, The Last Jedi, & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol II

📺 Gilmore Girls ย – Still slowly making my way through this on Netflix. I am in the middle of season 3. It’s a great show to watch when you just need something relaxing and cozy ๐Ÿ™‚

📺 Dancing with The Stars ย – Just started watching for the first time this season at hubby’s request (I am guessing because of David Ross) And I was so disillusioned with the voting. Obviously it’s all a popularity thing. And I never really did get why there was a Dancer on the show…but anywho…I wanted more Maks ๐Ÿ™

  1. The application for BookExpo freaked me out lol so I didn’t bother but I really wanted to go – especially since it is close by. Have fun and hope you share some pictures and what not. I am not a gardner but I love being outside and the weather has been better. Excited about Sync – I love that program. Have a great week!

  2. Yay, I love dancing with the stars. Ohhh I know why you love Maks. He is so yummy! Hehe.. Yep it is popularity contest. I’ve been a fan of the show for more than two years. The manipulation is so disgusting but I love the dancing. Haha.. it is far from a fair competition. A professional dancer should not be competing. My favorite this season is Rashad! He is awesome.
But Anyway, I hope you enjoy all the books you’re planning to read. Yay, so happy for you about the ratio. I heard it is a big deal.
Have a wonderful week, Melissa. Happy reading.

  3. I wish I was more of a gardener, but I am far from it, I’m afraid. My yard is pretty bare except for my roses (which pretty much take care of themselves) and my daughter’s new flowers. I love looking at a beautiful garden. I’m just don’t enjoy the work of getting it started and keeping it up, I’m afraid.

I hope you have a great time at the Book Expo! I have never been. Maybe someday.

I really want to see Wonder Woman, The Last Jedi, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol II too! So many great sounding movies coming out! I don’t know that I will see them in the theater, but hopefully someday.

I hope you have a great week, Melissa, and month of May! Happy Reading!

I just planted roses last year. I figured low maintenance so they were my cup of tea…I hope they survive and do well this year! You have a great week too!

  4. Oh, Melissa, I love A Man Called Ove on audiobook so hard, I hope you love it. I even made my husband watch the movie with subtitles! I love to garden, which for me involves patio veggie and herb garden, front flower beds, baskets and containers. I won’t plant until after Mother’s Day since we have had snow as late as early May.

Sounds like you are a busy gardener and smart to wait until the weather is certain.

I am enjoying the audio so far!

    • Melissa

It is definitely a challenge…especially if one goes crazy requesting everything and then they all get approved. That happened to me when I first stared. I assumed I would barely get approved for anything so I requested everything!

    • Melissa

Thanks Yvonne…it is a never ending battle with NetGalley…but a good battle ๐Ÿ™‚ Can’t complain about the opportunity to read and review early!

  5. I’m not going to BEA this year. It seemed like too much trouble for blogger registration and I just let it pass. I did go to mid-winter ALA last year because it was in Orlando. Have fun if you go! I hear they’re limiting the # of bloggers this year so it might not be crazy. Unless you mean the BloggerCon which I will never go to again lol

I think my Netgalley ratio is 88%. I could never tell if it was good or not lol I guess I have to go back and review old books too because the past few years I only request one or two at a time and have reviewed them all so it weren’t for those pesky older books I would have 100%

I went to BloggerCon one year and it wasn’t bad…maybe you mean BookCon? I went the first year and mayhem! Never again! We’ll see how BookExpo is this year.

And I don’t know how 88% compares to most but I was happy to gt over 85%..we both need to get a few of the old ones out of the way nd we’d be golden.

  6. My idea of gardening is talking about it lol, although seriously I do love veggies from the garden in summer. And I just finished I Found You last night and loved it.

I wasn’t sure how Kong would be, doesn’t sound like I missed too much. I am looking forward to Wonder Woman and The Last Jedi though!

I sort of garden but just enough so it’s enjoyable to be outside and read. I’m all about perennials though. I hate buying new flowers every year.
I hope you do a review on A Man Called Ove. I’ve heard good things.

    • Melissa

Things are certainly changing with BookExpo (including the name) We’ll see…this my be my last year…. Glad to hear that you loved Ove…the girls in my book club recommended it so I have a feeling I will too!

  8. I’ll be going to BookExpo this year. Not crazy about big crowds either. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have the audio for Born a Crime too but have yet to listen to it. I loved Wonder Woman as a teen. Looking forward to the movie too. Enjoy your new books!

    • Melissa

I loved Wonder Woman when I was small…hope the movie is as good as the trailer makes it seem! Maybe the crowds won’t be as bad this year?

    • Melissa

I’m jealous of your gardening skills! And yes…I can’t wait to get to Bring Her Home…it sounds really good.

    • Melissa

It’s back in NYC this year. I’m lucky as it’s only about 1.25hr train ride for me so I commute in daily and save money on the hotel fees. Though the train isn’t cheap…

    • Melissa

I should have expected it with DWTS but since this was my first (and probably only) season I was surprised. And A Man Called Ove is slowly growing on me:)

  9. Looks like lots going on.
Thanks for the reminder about SYNC. I meant to check in last week but forgot. Now I got them. ๐Ÿ™‚
Someday I will probably pick up A Man Called Ove on Audible. I like the looks of Bring Her Home.
I will be getting Serenity Harbor for a review over the summer. Happy Reading!

  10. Our weather is great! Everything is green and happy. The only thing that is green and NOT happy is our pool. The pump broke again. I swear I never want a pool again. That is until, I get to swim in it again ad I forget about the hassle. LOL.

I don’t live any where near Bookexpo unfortunately. ๐Ÿ™

Hope you have a great week! ~Aleen
